— Rich history

The History of Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a megalithic circle on Salisbury Plain which dates back over 5,000 years. It was built in stages over many decades, with the stone circle dating from around 2500 BC in the late Neolithic period. Fascinatingly, Stonehenge is actually connected to an impressive expanse of prehistoric sites across Wiltshire.

For thousands of years, people have debated about this breathtaking Neolithic site’s mysterious past. Folklore claims Stonehenge was conjured by Merlin, the famous wizard of Arthurian legend. The stones were said to have been magically transported from giants in Ireland. Others have claimed that, when the Vikings invaded England, the invading Danes erected the stones. The leading modern day interpretations are that it is either a holy site or a scientific observatory.

— FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Stonehenge?

The best time of year to visit Stonehenge is spring through to early autumn (April to October), as this period offers the best combination of pleasant weather, longer daylight hours, and vibrant landscapes. However, the shoulder months of April and October will offer the quietest experience with fewer crowds.

What is the best tour from London to Bath and Stonehenge?

The pairing works because the two sit on the same westward run from London, and a private day gives each its due instead of racing a coach schedule. Our Stonehenge and Roman Baths full-day trip covers both, and the inner circle version adds early access among the stones themselves.

How many other attractions can we visit as well as Stonehenge?

The number of additional attractions we are able to visit will entirely depend on your desired itinerary and your pacing preferences. If the attractions you wish to visit are located close together and you prefer a faster paced experience, we may be able to visit three or more additional attractions in a single day. On the other hand, slower paced tours will focus on visiting one or two other attractions, depending on their locations.

Which Stonehenge tour is best?

It depends whether you want the stones alone or the stones with company. A straightforward day trip suits anyone short of time. Pairing Stonehenge with Bath, Salisbury or Windsor gives the day more shape. And if you want to walk among the stones rather than view them from the path, the inner circle and Roman Baths tour is the one to look at.

Is the Stonehenge inner circle tour worth it?

The Stone Circle Experience is a one-hour English Heritage guided visit outside normal opening hours. A session can include up to 52 people, divided into two groups of 26 at the stones. You buy that ticket directly from English Heritage, then Best UK Tours can arrange a private day around the confirmed time.

Can I touch the stones at Stonehenge?

No, not on any visit. English Heritage keeps ordinary visitors on the path around the circle, and even inner circle access, which lets you walk among the stones, does not permit touching them. They are around 5,000 years old and the surfaces are fragile. Standing inside the circle at sunrise is the closest anyone gets, and it is quite enough.

What is included in my Stonehenge tour price?

The Best UK Tours price covers the transport, driver-guiding and light refreshments stated in your quote. You buy the relevant English Heritage admission yourself, including a Stone Circle Experience ticket if that is the visit you want, and meals are separate unless the quote says otherwise.

What is there to see at Stonehenge besides the stone circle?

More than most visitors expect. The visitor centre holds the artefacts and the reconstructed neolithic houses, and the wider landscape is full of burial mounds and earthworks that are part of the same World Heritage Site. Salisbury and its cathedral are close by. Our guide to Stonehenge sets out what is worth your time on the day.
