— Rich history

A History of the Cotswolds

The history of the Cotswolds dates back to the prehistoric era; evidence suggests a number of Neolithic settlements existed and ancient trackways existed in the region. During the Roman Empire, it became a prosperous area due to its farming and proximity to Cirencester, one of Roman Britain’s largest towns.

In the Medieval period, the Cotswolds flourished from the wool trade, leading to the construction of wealthy wool churches and stone cottages, many of which can still be seen today throughout the region.

The area has remained largely rural and has preserved its character through agricultural traditions. Today, the Cotswolds is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) known for its picturesque countryside and celebrated for its historical charm.

— FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a must see in the Cotswolds?

The honey-stone villages are the heart of it, and a good day takes in three or four of them, driving between and stopping when something catches your eye. The Cotswolds are a scatter of villages across several counties rather than one place, so which ones you see is a matter of taste. Our Oxford and Cotswolds day tour pairs a village afternoon with a morning among the colleges.

Is there a direct train from London to the Cotswolds?

Trains from Paddington serve Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham and Charlbury. Local buses connect some towns and villages, but coverage and frequency vary, so a rail visit usually needs an onward plan rather than the claim that the villages have no bus service.

What is a must-see in the Cotswolds?

Bibury and Castle Combe are the two everyone photographs, and both deserve their reputations. Bourton-on-the-Water and the Slaughters are the classic pairing, Stow-on-the-Wold has the market square and the famous yew-framed church door, and Broadway sits below its tower with long views. Our guide to the Cotswolds goes through them properly.

How many other places can I visit as well as the Cotswolds?

That depends on your itinerary and your pacing preferences. The villages sit close together, so a faster paced day can take in three or four of them along with Oxford or Stratford. A slower one might be two villages, a long lunch and a walk. Because the car is yours, the decision can be made on the day rather than in advance.

What refreshments are included?

Inclusions vary by booking. Check the written quote for any refreshments and for whether lunch remains separate; do not rely on a sitewide inclusion that is not stated in the booking terms.

What else is included in the tour price?

Your written quote should identify the guide, vehicle, parking, WiFi, tickets and other costs that are included or excluded. Those items should not be assumed from a general FAQ answer.

What is the best month to visit the Cotswolds?

Late April to June, when the gardens are out and the villages are green rather than parched. September is the other good month, with harvest colour and noticeably fewer coaches in Bibury and Bourton. July and August are pretty but busy, and the narrow lanes feel it. Winter has its own appeal if you are happy with short days and open fires.

Can I find a private driver in the Cotswolds?

A driver-guide can help join villages where public transport is limited. Pickup, parking and drop-off points still depend on local access rules and the chosen route, so the stops must be agreed rather than promising top-to-bottom access in every village. Read how the driver-guided tours are planned before enquiring.
