What the day feels like on the ground
The morning at Windsor takes longer than most people expect. Between the State Apartments, St George’s Chapel and the walk up through the wards, you want as much of the castle as possible before it fills up, which is why we start there rather than arriving in the middle of the day. If the Royal Standard is flying instead of the Union Jack, the King is in residence, and while that does not stop the visit it can occasionally close a room.
The drive west afterwards is a proper change of scene, out of the Thames Valley and up onto the open chalk of Salisbury Plain, and the last few miles are the ones that set the stones up. You arrive at the circle in the afternoon, walk the path around it with the burial mounds sitting on the skyline, and then turn for home as the light goes. Bring something warmer than you think you need for that half of the day, because the wind out on the plain is a different proposition to Windsor’s courtyards.
One thing to check before you pick a date
Windsor Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so this pairing runs on the other days of the week. If those are the only days you have free, the stones still work beautifully with a different second half, and our Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral day is the one we would usually suggest instead.
