The History of Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle, a stunning royal property in Berkshire, England, was built as a defensive base by William the Conqueror in 1070. The Castle wasn’t occupied residentially until around 1110 when King Henry I took the throne.
During the 1300s, Edward III had the greatest impact on the structure and use of the Castle and its grounds. Most notably, Windsor Castle became the centre of court and government and become the seat of the King’s newly founded Order of the Garter, an order of chivalry which is still alive and well today.
Though the current King, Charles III, resides at Clarence House, Windsor Castle still has a great number of uses to this day including investitures in the Grand Reception Room, audiences with the King, receptions in St George’s Hall, and worship at St George’s Chapel, a renowned Royal Peculiar.

State Apartments
Explore the opulent and ornately decorated ceremonial rooms of Windsor Castle. The rooms were originally built and designed for Charles II and Queen Catherine of Braganza and are now used for official royal functions and ceremonial events including investitures, awards ceremonies, and state banquets.
Order of the Garter

Trains run from Paddington, changing at Slough, and direct from Waterloo to Windsor and Eton Riverside, both taking around an hour door to door. By road it is about 25 miles. The train is fine if Windsor is all you are doing; a car earns its keep the moment you want to add Hampton Court or Stonehenge to the same day.
How many other attractions can we visit as well as Windsor Castle?
That depends on your itinerary and your pacing preferences. Windsor sits close to both Hampton Court and the road west, so a faster paced day can take in two or three places alongside the castle. A slower one gives the State Apartments and St George’s Chapel the time they deserve and adds a single stop. We will tell you honestly which shape suits your list.
Can you visit Queen Elizabeth II's resting place at Windsor?
Yes, when St George’s Chapel is open to visitors. The late Queen was laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, a small side chapel within St George’s, alongside Prince Philip, her parents and her sister. Henry VIII lies in the same chapel. The chapel closes to visitors on Sundays for services, so the day needs planning around that.
Who lives at Windsor Castle?
It remains a working royal residence rather than a museum, which is why parts of it close at short notice.
