Making the most of this Highlands tour from Edinburgh

Dress for a day outdoors rather than a day in a car. Most of the stops involve getting out, and the Highlands can be bright at one viewpoint and blowing rain at the next, so a waterproof and a warm layer earn their place in the boot even in summer. If you have longer in Scotland, our Isle of Skye and Loch Ness tour over three days gives the same part of the country more room and reaches Skye as well. If the Wars of Independence interest you more than the Highland scenery, our Braveheart day tour of Stirling and the Trossachs stays south of here and adds Linlithgow Palace, Doune Castle and Loch Katrine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we go inside Stirling Castle?

Stirling Castle is a visit rather than a view stop on this itinerary, so there is time to go in, learn about its part in the Wars of Independence and take in the views across the surrounding countryside from the walls. It is the first substantial stop of the day after the Kelpies, and it sets up the Highland history that follows.

Do we see Urquhart Castle at Loch Ness?

Yes, the day reaches Loch Ness with views of Urquhart Castle on the shore, and there is an optional stop in Drumnadrochit alongside it. A boat cruise on the loch can be added if you would like to get out on the water. Mention it when booking so the sailing can be worked into the day rather than squeezed in at the last minute.

Is it too much driving for one day?

It is a long day, and there is no sense pretending otherwise, but it is broken up by stops rather than driven in one push. The Kelpies, Stirling Castle, Callander, Glencoe, Loch Ness and Pitlochry all break the journey, and the car is comfortable between them. If you would rather cover less ground more slowly, tell us and we will trim the itinerary.

What is there to see in Pitlochry?

Pitlochry is a charming Highland town on the road south, and the stop is there to stretch your legs and take refreshments before the last stretch home. It comes late in the day when everyone is ready to be out of the car for a while, and it is a considerably better place to end on than a motorway services.

How is this different from the tour that starts in Glasgow?

The route differs even though the destination does not. From Edinburgh the day opens with the Kelpies and Stirling Castle, while the Glasgow version begins at Luss on the shores of Loch Lomond. Both reach Loch Ness and both return through the Cairngorms and Pitlochry. Our Highlands and Loch Ness tour from Glasgow is the one to look at if you are staying there.

Will we see any wildlife?

Red deer and birds of prey live in the Cairngorms, but sightings from a road journey are a matter of chance. Wildlife is not an itinerary promise, so enjoy the landscape and treat anything seen along the way as a bonus.

How many photo stops do we get in Glencoe?

Several, and where we pull in depends on the light and the weather on the day. Glencoe is famous for its dramatic mountains and its history, and your driver guide knows which viewpoints are worth stopping at rather than simply the ones with the biggest lay-by. There is no fixed number, which is rather the advantage of travelling privately.
