Frequently Asked Questions

How far north does the day from Glasgow actually go?

As far as Loch Ness and the village of Fort Augustus on its southern shore, by way of Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Fort William. The return then loops east through the Cairngorms and Pitlochry rather than retracing the same road, so you see different country in each direction. It is a full day of Highland scenery rather than a short hop out of the city.

Do we stop at Loch Lomond?

Yes, at Luss, a conservation village on the shores of the loch and the first proper stop of the day. You walk its flower-lined streets, which are about as pretty as Scotland gets, and take in the views across one of the country’s most treasured lochs. It is a gentle start before the road turns north and the scenery becomes considerably wilder.

Can we take a boat trip on Loch Ness?

A Loch Ness boat cruise is available as an optional extra, and it is the best way to look for Nessie if that is what you came for. Without it you still stop at Fort Augustus, walk beside the Caledonian Canal and take in the views along the loch and the mountains around it. Ask about the cruise when booking so the day can be built around the sailing.

Is this the same tour as the one that starts in Edinburgh?

It covers similar ground but the route differs, because the roads out of the two cities do. From Glasgow the day begins at Luss on Loch Lomond, while the Edinburgh version opens with the Kelpies and Stirling Castle. Both reach Loch Ness and return through the Cairngorms. If you are staying in Edinburgh, our Highlands and Loch Ness tour from Edinburgh is the one for you.

What wildlife might we see in the Cairngorms?

Red deer and birds of prey live in the Cairngorms, but a sighting from the road cannot be predicted or described as common for a particular tour. The route is worthwhile without a wildlife encounter, and anything seen is a bonus.

Is there time to stop and eat?

Yes, and Pitlochry is where most guests do it. The town comes towards the end of the day and there is time to relax, wander or take refreshments before the last stretch south. The itinerary is fully flexible, so if you would rather eat earlier, around Glencoe or Fort William, say so and the day is arranged that way.

Do we get out of the car at Glencoe?

Yes, several times. Glencoe is the part of the day people talk about afterwards, with towering peaks on either side of the road and stops for photographs at the best of the viewpoints. Your driver guide knows where to pull in, which matters on a road where the obvious lay-by is rarely the best one. There is history in the glen as well as scenery.
