Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we spend the nights on the three-day Skye tour?

The published route uses Portree as the island base. Your written proposal must name both overnight stays, the rooms and meals included, payment and cancellation terms; do not assume accommodation is booked from the route description alone. The UK multi-day tours page shows the other longer itineraries.

Do we start from Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Either, whichever suits where you are staying. Pick-up is from your accommodation in Edinburgh or Glasgow, and the tour returns you to the same city at the end of the third day. The route north takes in the Kelpies, Stirling and Doune Castle early on regardless of which you choose, so nothing is lost by starting from one rather than the other. If you have another day based in Edinburgh, our St Andrews and Kingdom of Fife day tour collects you from the same accommodation and crosses the Forth to the east coast.

Is three days enough for the Isle of Skye?

Three days is the duration advertised for this route, but weather, traffic, ferries, opening times and the amount of walking affect what fits. The written itinerary should state the actual overnight bases, entries and viewpoint or walking stops.

Do we walk at the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr?

The page must distinguish viewpoint stops from walks. Tell us the distance, terrain and mobility you are comfortable with, and rely on the walking plan confirmed for the date; the full hikes are not automatic parts of a road itinerary.

Which castles do we visit on the way to Skye?

The outline names Doune, Eilean Donan and Urquhart Castle. A stop does not necessarily include interior admission, so the written booking must state which tickets and entries are included and which locations are viewed from outside.

What do we see on the way back from Skye?

The eastern Highlands, which are a complete change from the island. The third day starts at Sligachan Bridge below the Cuillin, then follows Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle, passes through Inverness and crosses the Cairngorms, the largest national park in the UK. There is a stop in Pitlochry and a view of the Forth Bridge before you are dropped at your accommodation.

Can we see the Isle of Skye in a single day instead?

Not from Edinburgh, no, which is why this one runs over three days. We do run a single-day Skye tour, but it starts from Inverness, Skye itself or elsewhere in the Highlands, and it concentrates on the quieter Sleat Peninsula rather than the whole island. If you are already up north, our Skye day tour is the better fit.
