Frequently Asked Questions

Which Braveheart locations does the tour take in?

The outline uses Stirling and Linlithgow to tell the Wars of Independence story and views the Wallace Monument from the route. Interior visits, rampart access and tickets apply only when the written booking confirms them for the date.

Is this an Outlander tour as well as a Braveheart one?

It visits two Outlander locations without being built around them. Linlithgow Palace and Doune Castle have both appeared in the series, so fans of the show get something out of the day even though the thread running through it is Wallace and the Bruce. If the filming locations are the main reason you are coming, our private Outlander tour from Edinburgh is built for that instead.

What has been filmed at Doune Castle?

Outlander, Game of Thrones and Monty Python, which is a fair range for one medieval stronghold. You go inside rather than admiring it from the road, so you see the thick walls and soaring towers that made it such a useful stand-in for three very different productions. It tends to be the stop guests arrive at for the Wallace history and leave talking about coconuts.

What are the Kelpies?

Two monumental horse heads in gleaming steel, and the only modern landmark on an otherwise historic day. We pause there for photographs, which is really the only sensible response to something that size. The steel picks up whatever the Scottish light happens to be doing, so they look quite different under a bright sky than they do under cloud.

Do we get to meet the Highland cows?

A farm or roadside animal stop depends on the current host, access, timing and animal welfare conditions. Feeding or close photographs are included only when the booking confirmation expressly identifies that arrangement.

Can the tour start from Glasgow instead of Edinburgh?

Yes, pick-up runs from either city. We collect you from your accommodation in Edinburgh or Glasgow and set off from there, and because central Scotland sits between the two, neither starting point puts you at a disadvantage. Tell us where you are staying when you enquire and we will build the morning around it.

Do we see Loch Katrine and Loch Lubnaig?

Both, and they arrive in the second half of the day as the route turns into Trossachs country. Loch Lubnaig lies between rugged peaks and quiet woodland, and at Loch Katrine you can walk the shoreline beside the historic steamship Sir Walter Scott. The day then finishes at Aberfoyle, a village inside Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, which is a gentler note to end on than another castle.
