The locations, and what they are in real life
Almost everything you recognise from the series sits within walking distance of Richmond Green, which is why the show feels like it happens in a village rather than in London. The Crown and Anchor is really The Prince’s Head, a working pub on the edge of the Green that was there long before AFC Richmond was invented, and we stop outside it for photographs. Ted’s front door is on Paved Court, a narrow pedestrian lane running off the Green between the shopfronts, and it is an entirely ordinary Richmond doorway until you know what it is. Richmond Bridge, the stone arches the camera keeps returning to, is the oldest bridge still standing over the Thames in London. Richmond Hill above the town gives you the wide view down the river that the series uses whenever it wants to remind you where it is set, and that view is protected by its own Act of Parliament, which is about as English as the show ever managed. Below it the riverside terraces run down to the water, and the quieter back streets behind the Green hold the smaller locations most visitors walk straight past.
One thing that is not in Richmond is the ground. Nelson Road, home of AFC Richmond, was filmed at Crystal Palace’s stadium in south London, so if that is the shot you are after it is a separate errand from this day. Everything else on the route is genuinely here, which is the pleasure of it.
If you are between flights rather than staying in town, our London layover tour from Heathrow works the same way, and music rather than television is covered on the rock and roll tour of London.
