Harry Potter tour of London by private black cab

— Summary

Experience Harry Potter’s London on a private tour that brings the films to life.

This is a relaxed, chauffeur-driven experience designed for fans who want to see the real locations behind the story, without the rush of a group tour. Travelling in a traditional London taxi, you’ll move easily between sites, with time to stop, explore, and take it all in along the way.

The tour follows a route through central London, visiting filming locations and places that inspired the wizarding world. From the famous Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross to the streets said to have inspired Diagon Alley, each stop adds something familiar, while still showing you a different side of the city.

Along the way, you’ll see locations such as the Millennium Bridge, used in one of the film’s most dramatic scenes, and pass landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral and the Thames, which form part of London’s cinematic backdrop. There are also quieter corners—hidden streets and small passages—that capture the atmosphere fans often imagine when thinking of the wizarding world.

The experience is flexible throughout, with your driver-guide sharing insights, stories, and connections to the films as you go, without overwhelming the day. Whether you’re a long-time fan or simply curious, the tour balances the Harry Potter theme with a broader look at London itself. We run the same format for music, and our black cab rock and roll tour of London takes in Abbey Road, Carnaby Street and the Royal Albert Hall. There is a second screen tour on the same principle, our Ted Lasso filming locations tour, which leaves central London for the riverside streets of Richmond upon Thames.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we visit the famous platform at King's Cross?

Yes, King’s Cross is where the tour begins in earnest. There is a photo stop at the platform everyone comes to see, and time to look around the Harry Potter shop beside it before we move on. St Pancras Renaissance Hotel follows, and its exterior appears in the films as well, so the two are taken together.

Is this the same as the studio tour?

No, this is a tour of the real London locations behind the films. We travel by black cab between filming sites and the streets said to have inspired the wizarding world, all within the city itself, rather than visiting sets. It suits anyone who wants to see the London the films were shot in as well as the story they tell.

Which filming locations are on the route?

Leadenhall Market, which stood in for Diagon Alley and the Leaky Cauldron, the Millennium Bridge from one of the films’ most dramatic scenes, Australia House for Gringotts, and Claremont Square for 12 Grimmauld Place. Cecil Court and Goodwin’s Court are on the list too, and both are hidden streets often named as the inspiration for Diagon Alley.

Do we get out of the cab at the locations?

Yes, this is a tour you walk as well as ride. You go through Leadenhall Market on foot, explore the passages at Cecil Court and Goodwin’s Court, and stop for photographs along the way. The cab carries you between the sites so you are not crossing central London on foot, which is what makes the route workable in a day.

Can we stop at the Palace Theatre?

It can be added as an optional stop towards the end of the route, when we pass through the West End and the theatre district. The area is also linked to the film premieres, so your guide has plenty to say about it either way. Tell us in advance if the theatre matters to you and we will build the timings around it.

Is the tour only for Harry Potter fans?

Not at all, though fans get the most from it. The route takes in St Paul’s Cathedral, the Thames and the West End along the way, so you see a good deal of central London while following the theme. Long-time fans and merely curious passengers both do well on it, and our London tours page lists the other themed days.
