How we crafted our most ambitious tour itinerary.
The ideal length for experiencing the UK properly falls somewhere between “a rushed week” and “indefinite residence." Recently, we had the pleasure of designing our most comprehensive tour to date. It was a 23-day journey covering England, Wales, and Scotland.
Visiting the UK and making it a pleasant experience means carefully crafting an itinerary that allows proper immersion. It should move at a sustainable pace. No 6am starts, no racing to locations, and no feeling like you need a holiday to recover from your holiday.
Here’s why longer tours reveal Britain in ways shorter visits can’t match.
How Much Of Britain Can You See In 3 Weeks?
Week-long tours can sometimes involve making difficult choices. Should you focus on England and skip Scotland? See London but miss the countryside? Additionally, should you visit the Lake District or spend time in the Cotswolds?
A longer tour eliminates most of these compromises and requires a lot less sacrifice. Consequently, it leaves you free to explore regions of rural England. You can also venture into Wales’s castles and mountains, and reach the Scottish Highlands. Importantly, all of this occurs at a pace that doesn’t feel exhausting and relentless.
Is It Best To Start In London?
As it is the nation’s capital, our custom 23-day itinerary dedicated three full days to London and included tours of Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and the Thames. Moreover, it allowed time for culture with a visit to the British Museum, the V&A, and an evening at a West End theatre.
It gave our guests the chance to see the Tower of London, the Crown Jewels, cross Tower Bridge, and wander through Borough Market, which is full of artisan producers and international cuisine.
Visiting London in your first few days allows you to experience the foundations of Britain. This approach leaves energy for the weeks ahead.
Where Are The Best Countryside Areas In England?
Longer tours truly excel when you want to be immersed in the stunning beauty of the British countryside. For a sense of how these longer itineraries unfold, take a look at our five day English adventure tour. See Windsor, Oxford, the Cotswolds, Bath, and Stonehenge. Take time to drink in the Cotswolds villages like Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold. These are all places that define the picturesque English countryside.
A stop in the city of Bath combines Roman engineering with Georgian elegance, and contemporary culture all in one compact, walkable city. Furthermore, add Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge and it creates a journey through 5,000 years of British history.

Are There A Lot Of Castles In Wales?
By day seven we were venturing into Wales, a country that many UK tours sadly choose to skip, and it’s their loss! As a result, Cardiff combines medieval history, Victorian architecture, and contemporary culture in ways that reveal Wales’ unique identity.
The drive through Snowdonia showcases dramatic mountain landscapes that rival the Scottish Highlands. Also, the castles of Wales are a sight to be seen. For example, Harlech Castle perches atop high cliffs, Caernarfon Castle has royal connections, and Conwy Castle’s medieval walls demonstrate why Wales is the “castle capital of the world.”
Just a short jump from Wales is Liverpool; this transition gives visitors the chance to experience maritime history and Beatles heritage. It creates a natural transition from Wales back toward England’s northern regions.
What Does Northern England Have To Offer?
Days eleven and twelve took us to Yorkshire with the Dales’ pastoral beauty and York with architecture and buildings dating back to Roman times and Viking settlements. Furthermore, historic city walls, timber-framed medieval streets, and the Gothic grandeur require time to appreciate properly.
From there we travel to the Lake District which represents some of England’s most spectacular scenery. Castlerigg Stone Circle is nearly 4,000 years old, and provides a prehistoric context that connects the area to Stonehenge. In addition, Borrowdale’s valleys, Grasmere’s Wordsworth connections, Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm, and a Windermere cruise combine literary heritage with the area’s natural beauty.
Does A 23-day Tour Include Scotland?
The best part of a 3 week tour is that you can visit anywhere you want. On this tour we dedicated almost a week to Scotland, and you could spend longer there if you wanted to. Notably, sites like Edinburgh castle, the Royal Mile, and the former Royal Yacht Britannia establish the culture of the Scottish capital.
The route through Stirling Castle, Glencoe’s dramatic valley, and along Loch Ness toward Inverness showcases landscapes that are nothing short of breathtaking. Meanwhile, time spent on the Isle of Skye provides time for the Fairy Pools, Talisker Distillery, and Eilean Donan Castle. This is one of Scotland’s most photographed castles!
A final journey through the Cairngorms National Park and Falkland Palace created a gentle conclusion. This happened before returning to England. Falkland sits in the Kingdom of Fife, and our day tour of St Andrews and the Fife coast pairs the palace with the cathedral ruins, the Old Course and the fishing villages of the East Neuk.
Are Any Days Spent At the Coast?
Any tour of the UK would not be complete without a visit to the coast – we are an island after all! The final three days of this custom tour was spent in the historic coastal city of Brighton, which offered a pleasant contrast after touring through cities, countryside, and mountains.
The Seven Sisters chalk cliffs provide dramatic coastal scenery, and Brighton combines the best of Victorian pier tradition with contemporary urban architecture. Walk the promenade, eat hand-churned ice-cream, and experience the seaside like a true Brit.
How the legs join up on the road
A list of places hides the part that decides whether three weeks feels generous or exhausting, which is the driving between them. Heading into Wales means crossing the Severn estuary into Monmouthshire, and the road north out of Cardiff climbs through the Brecon Beacons and mid Wales before the mountains open out onto the castle coast at Harlech, Caernarfon and Conwy. From there the north Wales shore road runs east into Liverpool, so that leg is a short one by the standards of the trip.
The other half of the country behaves the same way. Yorkshire and the Lake District sit either side of the Pennines, and the crossing between them is worth doing slowly rather than quickly. From Cumbria it is a straight run north over the border into Scotland, and the return south from Fife is the longest stretch of the whole itinerary, which is why we break it rather than attempt it in one sitting. We plan each day around realistic driving time and worthwhile stops rather than apply a fixed mileage promise to every itinerary.
