Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the tour go all the way to Oban?

Oban is the Gateway to the Isles, a working harbour town on the west coast where the ferries leave for the Hebrides. There is time to explore the harbour, and the fresh seafood is the best reason to make lunch a proper stop rather than an afterthought. Reaching the coast is also what distinguishes this day from the more common inland Highland runs.

What is Kilchurn Castle?

A ruin on the edge of Loch Awe and one of the most photogenic castles in Scotland, which is why it is a stop rather than something passed on the road. It sits low against the water with mountains rising behind it, so the photographs largely take themselves. There is time for a leisurely stroll as well as for pictures.

Do we stop at Castle Stalker?

Yes, for photographs. Castle Stalker rises from a small tidal islet just off the coast and it is one of the most striking sights of the day. It works best as a stop rather than a visit, since the setting is the whole point of it, and it falls neatly between Oban and the run inland through Glencoe.

What do we pass on the way out and on the way back?

Out by the Forth Bridges and the Kelpies, back through Rannoch Moor and Callander. The Forth Rail Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Kelpies at Falkirk are the horse-head sculptures that have become one of Scotland’s best known modern landmarks. Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument are view stops on the way through, and Linlithgow Palace is an optional stop near the end.

Is Glencoe on this tour as well as the coast?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons this day works so well. After Oban and Castle Stalker the road turns inland through Glencoe, with its jagged peaks and its dark history, and then across Rannoch Moor, one of the last genuine wildernesses in Scotland. Coast in the middle of the day and mountains at the end of it is a fine combination.

Can we start from Glasgow rather than Edinburgh?

Yes, pick-up is from your accommodation in either city. From Edinburgh the day begins with the Forth Bridges and the Kelpies, and from Glasgow you join the same route a little further along. The itinerary offers complete flexibility in any case, so tell us what you most want to see and the day is arranged around that.

How does this compare with the Loch Ness day tours?

It goes west rather than north, which makes it a different day entirely. There is no Loch Ness here; instead you get Loch Awe, the coast at Oban, Castle Stalker and Glencoe. If Loch Ness is on your list as well, our private tours of Scotland page shows the days built around it, and plenty of guests take one of each.
