Over the sea to Skye: a private day tour

— Summary

An adventure to Skye encapsulates the beauty of the Scottish countryside, experiencing breathtaking landscapes along the way.

On this tour you’ll travel the Great Glen alongside Loch Ness before turning northwest at Invermoriston to pass the Five Sisters of Kintail. We then descend through the site of the Battle of Glen Sheil towards Loch Duich before stopping at the iconic Eilean Donan Castle.
Possibly the most memorable part of your adventure, we then cross the Skye Bridge to the Isle of Skye. First we escape the crowds to explore the Sleat Peninsula, also known as ‘The Garden Of Skye’, before paying a visit to Isle Ornsay with its Gaelic crafts shops, whisky shops and gallery (a whisky tasting may be possible when the supplier, time, price and availability are confirmed).

We continue to Armadale Castle & Gardens before journeying to Skye’s southernmost point via the islands most famously scenic road, offering breathtaking views of Knoydart, Loch Nevis and nearby Isles of Eigg & Rhum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which part of the Isle of Skye does this tour cover?

The Sleat Peninsula in the south, known as the Garden of Skye, rather than the northern loop most day tours take. That means Armadale Castle and its gardens, Isleornsay and Eilean Iarmain, the Gaelic college at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, and the scenic road to the island’s southern tip with views across to Knoydart, Loch Nevis and the isles of Eigg and Rhum.

Do we see the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing?

Not on this one. Those sit in the north of Skye and reaching them properly needs more than a day from the mainland, which is why we take the quieter south instead. If the northern landmarks are what you came for, our three-day Isle of Skye and Loch Ness tour covers the Storr, the Quiraing, the Fairy Glen and Neist Point with two nights on the island.

Is there a whisky tasting on the tour?

There is an optional tasting at Isleornsay, where the shops run to Gaelic crafts, whisky and a gallery, and it is a pleasant way to spend part of an afternoon. It is an addition rather than part of the standard day, so mention it when you book. The setting alone, on a quiet shore looking across to Knoydart, is worth the stop regardless.

What is the Glenelg ferry and can we use it?

It is the last manually operated turntable ferry in Scotland, crossing between Skye and the mainland, and it is a seasonal and optional part of the day. When it is running it is a memorable way to make the crossing, with a fair chance of seals and other wildlife alongside. Outside the season, the Skye Bridge does the job perfectly well.

Do we stop at Eilean Donan Castle?

Yes, and you can go inside if you would like to. Eilean Donan stands where three sea lochs meet and it is the most photographed castle in Scotland for good reason, particularly with the Five Sisters of Kintail behind you on the approach. Take your time on the walls for the views, or simply take the photograph everyone comes for and carry on to the bridge.

Where does the Skye day tour start from?

Pick-up is from your accommodation in Inverness, on Skye itself or elsewhere in the Highlands, which is what makes a single day on the island workable. Starting from Edinburgh or Glasgow would put most of the day in the car. If you are based in the central belt, our private tours of Scotland page sets out the longer itineraries that suit better.

What is Sabhal Mor Ostaig?

Sabhal Mor Ostaig is a centre for Gaelic language and culture on the Sleat Peninsula. The college asks visitors to arrange a visit in advance, so entering the site is part of the day only when an appointment has been confirmed; otherwise the itinerary can cover its place in Skye’s Gaelic culture without promising access.
