Frequently Asked Questions
Which Outlander filming locations does the tour visit?
Seven in a day, all within reach of Edinburgh. Midhope Castle stands in for Lallybroch, Blackness Castle for Fort William, Linlithgow Palace for Wentworth Prison and Doune Castle for Castle Leoch. Culross becomes the village of Cranesmuir, complete with Claire’s herb garden, Dysart Harbour plays Le Havre, and Falkland is the 1940s Inverness of the opening episodes.
Can we go inside Lallybroch at Midhope Castle?
The visit is to the exterior and the surrounding countryside rather than the interior, which is how Midhope appears on screen in any case. Jamie Fraser’s family home is the courtyard, the doorway and the tower you recognise from the series, and that is exactly what you stand in front of. It is the location fans most want photographs of, so we allow for that.
Do we visit Castle Leoch on the Outlander tour?
Yes, Doune Castle plays Castle Leoch, home of Clan MacKenzie, and it is one of the stops where you go inside rather than admire from the gate. The medieval interiors are part of the visit and your driver guide fills in the real history behind them, which turns out to be a decent story in its own right. It is among the most famous castles in Scotland.
Where was the scene with Jamie's ghost filmed?
In Falkland, which stands in for 1940s Inverness in the opening episodes. The Bruce Fountain in the middle of the village is where the ghost appears, and you can walk the same streets around it. Falkland is a genuinely handsome Fife village in its own right, so it works as a stop even for anyone in your party who has not watched an episode.
Is the tour any good if only one of us watches Outlander?
It works better than you might expect. Every location on the day is a real Scottish site with its own history: Linlithgow Palace, Blackness Castle on the Firth of Forth, Doune Castle and the eighteenth-century village of Culross all stand on their own merits. Your driver guide covers the actual history alongside the filming, so nobody spends the day waiting in the car.
Where do we stop for lunch on the Outlander tour?
In Linlithgow, with relaxed time to eat in the historic town rather than a sandwich on the move. It falls naturally after the palace, which sits at the heart of the town, so you can walk the streets around it afterwards. The itinerary is flexible, so if you would rather eat earlier or later the day is reshaped around that.
Can we add the Outlander locations further north?
Clava Cairns and Culloden are not part of this Edinburgh day. They appear on a separate Inverness-area Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and Culloden itinerary, but its current route, pickup, tickets and availability must be confirmed before it is treated as an addition to a longer trip.
