Private tour from Cardiff to the Wye Valley

— Summary

Journey through one of Britain’s most scenic border regions, where ancient castles, Roman ruins, and tranquil river valleys tell stories of Wales’ past.

Leaving Cardiff, we travel to Chepstow Castle, which is perched dramatically above the River Wye. Then we move on to the hauntingly romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey, whose Gothic arches inspired poets like Wordsworth. The tour continues to Raglan Castle, a grand Tudor fortress with impressive towers and a fascinating history.

If Roman Britain interests you, the route may include Caerleon, where the Roman Baths sit alongside the amphitheatre and the only Roman legionary barracks still on view in Europe. Admission and opening arrangements must be confirmed for the date. The Wye Valley itself is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so expect plenty of scenic stops for photos along the riverbanks.

Your itinerary is flexible, allowing you to linger at favourite spots or adjust for daylight hours in winter. By the end of the day, you’ll have explored a beautiful mix of history, legend, and stunning countryside before returning to Cardiff. The Wye Valley is one of several day trips from Cardiff we would happily recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is there to see at Tintern Abbey?

The ruins themselves, and they are among the most atmospheric in Britain. Tintern is a twelfth-century abbey left roofless beside the river, its Gothic arches standing open to the sky, and it is the view that drew Wordsworth and a good many painters after him. Photographers tend to need longer here than they expect, which a flexible itinerary allows for.

Do we go inside Chepstow Castle?

Yes, it is the first stop out of Cardiff and you step inside rather than admire it from the car park. Chepstow is one of the oldest stone castles in Britain, perched above the River Wye, and its Norman history is the thread your driver guide picks up as you explore. The setting alone would justify the stop, with the river directly below the walls.

Can we add the Roman site at Caerleon?

Caerleon can be requested as an optional stop. Cadw describes its amphitheatre as the most complete in Britain, alongside Roman baths and a museum; current opening and enough time in the route must be confirmed before the stop is included.

Is Raglan Castle included?

Raglan is an optional stop rather than a fixed one, so you can take it or leave it depending on what else you want from the day. It is one of the most impressive medieval castles in Wales, with towers, walls and a grand structure that feels more palace than fortress. Guests who like castles usually take it; those who prefer scenery skip it.

What happens on this tour in winter?

We focus on the highlights to make the most of the daylight, which is in short supply in the Welsh winter. That usually means the fixed stops rather than every optional one, so the day still feels unhurried instead of a race against the light. Tintern with mist coming off the river is arguably better in winter than in summer, so it is no great loss.

Where do we stop for lunch in the Wye Valley?

At a local cafe or in a countryside setting, with relaxed time set aside rather than eating on the move. The Wye Valley is not short of pleasant places to stop, and your driver guide will suggest what suits the route and the weather. Because the itinerary is yours to personalise, an early lunch or a long one are both easily arranged.

Are we in Wales or England on this tour?

Wales, though only just. The Wye Valley runs along the Welsh border, and Chepstow, Tintern and Raglan all sit on the Welsh side of it. That border setting is part of what shaped them: these are frontier castles and abbeys, built where two countries met. Our private tours of Wales page covers the rest of the country if you are staying longer.
