A Guide to the City of Bath – England

Bath is renowned for its awe-inspiring Georgian architecture and rich Roman heritage. For enchantment, history, and totally unforgettable experiences, take a trip to Bath and experience the wonder of this beautiful ancient city. Read on for inspiration for filling your itinerary.

The Ancient Roman Baths

The Roman Baths are often the highlight of tourists’ first visit to Bath. Built around 70AD during the early Roman Empire, the Roman Baths stand today as a well-preserved and immense site of extensive Roman ruins.

The Roman Baths site also features an interactive museum which transports its visitors back to Roman times. Containing 2,000 years’ worth of history, the museum is home to thousands of archaeological finds from pre-Roman and Roman Britain.

Incredibly, the Roman Baths were built on top of the natural hot springs and the original pipes are still intact. 1,170,000 litres of steaming spring water still fills the bathing site every single day, with temperatures reaching up to 46°C.

Bath Abbey

The picturesque Bath Abbey dominates the Bath skyline with its dramatic mix of Roman and Gothic architecture. The Abbey offers a moment of stillness in the heart of a city known for its vibrance and life.

Bath Abbey has been a place of worship since 675 AD. Intriguingly, the architecture of the West Front of Bath Abbey was inspired by a dream of Bishop Oliver King’s of angels, an olive tree, and a crown.

Parade Gardens

Situated along the River Avon, the Parade Gardens is a delightful two-and-a-half acre grade II listed park in central Bath, home to some of the finest traditional carpet and sculptural bedding displays in England.

The Parade Gardens are a vibrant, scenic spot with an excellent view of the Pulteney Bridge and the weir. Their awe and beauty are not to be missed, especially being conveniently located near to the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey.

Royal Crescent

Bath is abundant in stunning Georgian architecture, with grand facades, detailed embellishments, and perfect adornments. Above all other architecture in Bath, the city’s famous crescents are not to be missed.

The Royal Crescent is one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in all of England. Made up of thirty individual houses, this stunning crescent-shaped row of terraced properties was designed and built by John Wood the Younger, a famous English architect, in the late 1700s.

The beauty of the Royal Crescent has been used as the backdrop for a number of films and TV shows. Most notably, it featured in the 2007 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion and most recently in Netflix’s smash hit show, Bridgerton.
